Radial Retaining Rings
Radial retaining rings, often referred to as e-clips, c-clips, poodle rings and more, are a type of external retaining ring that offers a simple yet effective way to secure components. Engineered to be installed into a groove from the side (radially), these rings are ideal when axial access is limited. Combining simplicity, functional design, and a choice of configurations, radial rings handle lower thrust loads than axial rings and are often used when thrust loading is a secondary consideration. Rotor Clip offers a wide range of standard sizes, materials, and finishes, and can manufacture custom configurations in-house to meet exact application requirements with consistency and precision.
Features & Benefits:
-

Radial Retaining Ring Installation & Removal
Radial retaining rings are used in applications where axial installation is not possible due to interference from other components. By machining a groove onto the shaft and installing the external retaining ring, the shoulder ensures components are held securely in place. Since these ring types are not manufactured with lug holes, applicators, dispensers, and tailored packaging options can help speed up and simplify the installation and removal process.

Application Spotlight: Drone with E-Ring
In this drone application, the Rotor Clip E-ring securely holds the motor shaft in place, ensuring everything stays aligned during high-speed flight.
Even under the vibrations and forces that drones experience in the air, the E-ring keeps the motor running smoothly and reliably. This small but essential part maintains performance and stability.

Radial Retaining Ring FAQs
A radial retaining ring is a type of fastener that installs from the side of a shaft or housing, rather than axially. Also known as E-clips or C-clips, these external retaining rings snap into a machined groove to hold components in place. Most radial rings can be installed quickly without special tools, and are often removed just as easily using pliers or a flathead screwdriver.
Radial retaining rings are ideal when axial access is limited or when assembly speed is important. They are best suited for applications with light to moderate thrust loads, where easy installation and removal are beneficial.
An e-ring is a type of radial retaining ring, named for its “e” shape, that is installed into a machined groove from the side. It is one of the most commonly used retaining rings due to its simple installation and secure hold. E-rings are widely used in a variety of applications, including automotive assemblies, power tools, appliances, and industrial equipment.
