Stainless Steel

Rotor Clip Stainless Steel Products

The most well known fact about stainless steel is in the name, it’s stainless. Although not fully stainless, stainless steel does not readily rust, corrode or stain with water, like uncoated carbon steel, and it still keeps its strength.

The stainless aspect of the steel comes from the chemical element known as chromium. Chromium has a high polish, resistant to tarnishing and has a high melting point. Generally speaking, chromium and carbon steel share similar ions which bond together. The result is an invisible protective film that covers the surface of the steel. This prevents corrosion from spreading into the internal structure of the metal causing it to rust and ultimately fail.

There are different grades of steel which are graded by SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers) based on how well the stainless steel resists corrosion, it’s strength and heat resistance.

Main Benefits of Stainless Steel

Rotor Clip offers stainless steel for its tapered and constant section retaining ring, spiral retaining rings, and wave springs.

High resistance to corrosion

If the application requires the ring or spring to be exposed to sea water or other high corrosive working environments for long periods of time, stainless steel is an excellent choice to ensure the application will continue to work properly without it being jeopardized.

Heat resistance

If the application is being exposed to intense heat for long periods of time, the wave spring or ring made from stainless steel will not be as easily damaged, deform, or melt as parts made from standard carbon steel.

Esthetics

Stainless steel can be used for its reflective properties. Stainless steel has a reflective finish which can be used to decorate or blend into an application where the ring or wave spring is exposed. The stainless steel is easily cleaned and will not become discolored or fade over time keeping the product looking new.

Tapered and Constant Section Retaining Rings:

  • PH 15-7 Rotor Clip Designation SS
Mo is an extra strength corrosion-resistant steel, capable of preventing atmospheric oxidation at temperatures up to 900º F. It also offers the following advantages:

    • Minimal distortion due to unique heat-treating process.
    • A minimum of 225,000 psi for high ultimate tensile strength.
    • High creep strength. Note: We reserve the right to substitute PH 17-7 stainless steel material for PH 15-7 Mo on larger rings.
  • DIN 1.4122 Rotor Clip Designation SG
A grade of stainless steel for retaining rings ordered in / for European countries.

Spiral Retaining Rings:

  • PH17-7 Rotor Clip Designation SS – A high strength corrosion-resistant steel with good workability, easy hardening and excellent mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Can be heat treated at relatively low temperatures for high strength properties.
  • AISI 302 Rotor Clip Designation SJ – This general purpose stainless steel offers corrosion resistance and can be cold worked to high tensile strengths.
  • AISI 316 Rotor Clip Designation SU – This type of stainless steel is heat resistant with superior corrosion resistance than other chromium nickel steels. It offers high creep strength at elevated temperatures and resistance to pitting.
  • A286 Rotor Clip Designation SY

Wave Springs:

  • PH 17-7 Rotor Clip Designation SQ – This is used for high stress and fatigue applications. It has higher corrosion resistance than SAE 1070-1090, and can withstand much higher temperatures without losing spring qualities.
